Ranking the Most Dangerous Bear Species

Wes Larson, Bear Biologist & Tooth and Claw: True Stories of Animal Attacks podcast co-host, ranks all eight bear species by the danger they pose to humans. Number 8 is the Andean bear, which is rare and docile, followed by the Giant panda, and American black bear. Next are Sun bears, which are small and arboreal, but have killed humans in the past. At number 4 are Polar bears, which are carnivorous and will eat you if they attack. Next are brown bears, which have been known to attack humans if they are protecting cubs or feel threataned. Finally, Asiatic black bears are in the number 2 spot, due to the surge in attacks in Japan in 2025, and  Sloth bears are in the number 1 spot. Sloth bears are defensive and live in heavily populated areas.
